The experience

The museum, which is located in the prestigious Castello degli Imperiali of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi made available by the Municipal Administration, aims to be the choral story of emigration; a single great story of farewells, of meetings and clashes with the foreign country, of nostalgia, of daily joys and sorrows, of integration into the new reality, of defeats and victories, of comparisons and reflections with the immigration of Today.

The SOUTHERN MUSEUM OF MEMORY: EMIGRATION RESEARCH CENTER was created with the intention of evoking and underlining the historical, cultural and human heritage linked to the great migratory exodus that involved Italy starting from the end of the nineteenth century, involving more than 27 million of people. In this context, the impact of the southern population, especially that of the internal areas, has been significant since the early years of the twentieth century. The whole of southern Italy and in particular the internal areas were protagonists of this important historical and human event. The idea of the museum was born from the great success of the first exhibition on emigration “Partono i Bastimenti” which was set up from 19 August to 10 October 2014 in the rooms of the Castello degli Imperiale of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi.
