LET’S REMEMBER ON THE WALLS!!! “The suffering of emigration: a tender farewell for a necessary departure in search of work… with a suitcase full of memories, dreams, hopes.”
“The suffering of emigration: a tender farewell for a necessary departure in search of work… with a suitcase full of memories, dreams, hopes.”
The atmosphere that you breathe when walking through the town, where every corner seems to tell a story, glimpses of rural daily life, fairy-tale characters, zodiac signs and popular traditions, makes this place set in the heart of Cilento and which everyone knows as Piano Vetrale, the town of murals.
A village of 300 souls and an incredible number of murals that decorate the walls of the many homes that have transformed the village into a true “open-air museum”.
In Piano Vetrale for over forty years the local Proloco has been commemorating the artistic genius of the local painter Paolo de Matteis with the event “The Golden Brush”, an exhibition of contemporary art where artists of all ages and backgrounds give vent to their creativity by decorating the walls of this fabulous and silent village.
The idea of the first murals was born from the need to decorate the facades of the houses under construction of those who, having emigrated to Germany, sent the money they earned to expand their homes. In fact, some of these murals want to remember the departure of the people from Piano Vetrale scattered throughout the rest of the world and that they will never be forgotten and that here, those who remained remain patiently waiting for their return. Among these, the founders of the “Fiaba in borgo” Association which in 2021 with the project “Fiabe ieri oggi…..e domani” begins a work of valorisation of the historic center with fantasy paths created by the master Lavinio Sceral and the designer Ciro Ruggier Spark.
Their motto is “EMPATIA” from the Greek en-pathos “feeling inside”, the ability to see the world through the eyes of another person without resorting to verbal communication, trying to understand their affections, thoughts and emotions.
Those who return to Piano Vetrale as roots tourists are “protagonists of the journey”, the visitor becomes the traveler of time who dialogues with the past, present and future and says Giuseppe Sica of the “Fiaba in borgo” Association – “Travelling to discover one’s own roots and family history is an extraordinary experience to reconnect with your origins.
